From Invasive to Invaluable

Carbon | Livelihoods | Biodiversity

35 %

Invasive species have occupied 35% of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in South India.

WildCarbon restores the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve by transforming invasive flora, Lantana camara and Senna spectabilis, into biochar, fertile soils and carbon credits.
WildCarbon creates indigenous community livelihoods and regenerates biodiversity.

Our Ambitions

5,000

ha

Removal

Removal of invasive plants in collaboration with the Forest Department, followed by the restoration of native grasses and trees to enhance biodiversity and mitigate human–wildlife interactions.

Indigenous Livelihoods

We empower tribal communities in the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve with fair wages, collective ownership and skilled jobs in engineering tech and operations to drive a regenerative conservation economy.

50

Harvesting Teams

We deploy tried and tested mobile removal machines across 5 Protected Areas. Harvesting teams are self-managed and modelled upon the proven Lantana Elephant distributed model. Tractor Harvesting Units are re-purposed and maintained by our in-house community engineering team to be low-cost, easy to repair with minimal ecological impact.

Sequestered

We use advanced, low-emissions pyrolysis technology to create premium quality biochar, generating carbon credits and selling biochar to local agriculture to fund restoration, create livelihoods and scale invasive removal across India’s forests.

Insights

Our Process

Research

Five years prototyping methods of invasives removal with minimum soil disturbance.

Fully mechanical, small-scale and ecologically sound

Feedstock Preparation

Shredding lantana and drying to reduce moisture levels below 15%

Conversion to Biochar

Through pyrolysis — heating the biomass in a low-oxygen environment with low-emission machines — premium biochar is produced.
